Mysticism in Modern Times

Mysticism in Modern Times

Mysticism continues to evolve and influence various aspects of modern life, including psychology, religion, and culture.

Mysticism in Modern Times

  • Psychology Modern psychological research has confirmed that Buddhist insight meditation and Jesuit spirituality can promote healthy personality growth. Some psychologists argue that psychotherapy is a modern form of rational mysticism because free association is a type of meditation that can lead to intuitive insights and reveal a unity underlying disconnected thoughts. Transpersonal psychology uses classical mystical techniques to facilitate self-actualization, while some psychotherapists incorporate meditation into their practice. Additionally, many religions are becoming increasingly psychologized, with religious counseling and pastoral work adopting psychotherapeutic approaches.
  • Religion Mysticism has emerged as a living influence in modern times, playing an important role in the history of Christian religion. Scholars study mysticism from psychological, comparative, philosophical, and theological perspectives, with increasing attention given to mystical texts in the 20th century. The role of mysticism in Christianity has been evaluated by modern theologians, with some Protestant thinkers denying it an integral role and others, along with Anglican thinkers, championing its importance. Orthodox Christianity considers mysticism so central that all theology in the Christian East is mystical theology.
  • Culture Mysticism enriches conventional religiosity with new symbols and images. Religious experience in meditation and mysticism assimilates existing symbols, giving some higher value and focusing on others. New forms of expression arise from visionary experiences and the need for suitable meditation tools, such as holy sounds, words, and objects.
