  • St. Teresa of Ávila This Spanish Carmelite nun (1515-1582) was a key figure in the Carmelite Reform and is known for her spiritual writings. Her works, including The Life of the Mother Teresa of JesusThe Way of Perfection, and The Interior Castle, are classics in Christian mysticism, detailing her journey toward union with God through prayer and contemplation. She was proclaimed a doctor of the church in 1970.
  • St. John of the Cross As a Spanish poet and mystic (1542-1591) and a Doctor of the Church, St. John of the Cross worked with St. Teresa of Ávila to restore the Carmelite order to its original principles. His poems, such as "The Spiritual Canticle," "The Dark Night of the Soul," and "The Living Flame of Love," describe the soul's path to reunion with God.
  • St. Hildegard of Bingen A German abbess, composer, and visionary mystic (1098-1179), St. Hildegard experienced visions from a young age, which she recorded in Scivias. She also composed music and wrote on medicine and natural history. She was proclaimed a doctor of the church in 2012 and is a patron saint of musicians and writers.
  • Meister Eckhart As a Dominican theologian and writer (c. 1260-1327/28), Meister Eckhart is known as the greatest German speculative mystic. He preached to contemplative nuns and wrote about the soul's union with God. His works include Talks of InstructionThe Book of Divine ConsolationThe Nobleman, and On Detachment.
  • Rumi This 13th-century Persian poet and Sufi mystic (1207-1273) is celebrated for his poems that express his love, longing, and loss, particularly after meeting Shams al-Din. Rumi's Dīvān-e Shams ("The Collected Poetry of Shams") and Masnavi-yi Ma'navi are filled with mystical teachings conveyed through stories and allegories.
